SS. SAPHIR

THE NORWEGIAN SHIP SS.SAPHIR (SAPPHIRE) WAS TORPEDOED ON THE 25th OF MAY 1918 BY U-94, ON ROUTE FROM BARRY TO BAYONNE. CARRYING A CARGO OF COAL, SINKING IN 36m 1 1/2 MILES FROM TEVOSE HEAD. SHE WAS 1406 tons AND 74m LONG. BLOWN UP BY SALVAGERS IN THE 1970s SHE WAS FORGOTTEN AND POSITION LOST, DISCOVERED AGAIN BY MID CORNWALL DIVERS IN 1996. THE AREA OFF TRVOSE HEAD CAN BE SUBJECT TO STRONG CURRENTS ON SPRINGS. SLACK IS +30 MINUTES AT HIGH/LOW NEWQUAY. THE BEST LAUNCH SITE IS ROCK 7 miles AWAY PARKING IS LIMITED SO GET THERE EARLY, THERE IS A LAUNCH FEE.
