THE SS.ORCHIS LEFT PAR ON THE 30th NOVEMBER 1935 WITH A CARGO OF CHINA CLAY, SHORTLY AFTER A SERIOUS LEAK WAS DISCOVERED IN THE ENGINE ROOM; POSSIBLY A FAILED STERN GLAND. THE CAPTAIN IMMEDIATELY ORDERED ABANDON SHIP, THE CREW GETTING INTO THE LIFEBOAT AS THE SHIP SETTLED BY THE STERN. THE ORCHIS IS 45m LONG AND 483 tons SHE NOW LIES IN 46m OF WATER ORIENTATED WEST/EAST NEAR TO OWEN ROCK. THE BEST PLACE TO LAUNCH IS CAFFA MILLS CAR PARK BY THE CAR FERRY IN FOWEY (4 miles FROM WRECK). LAUNCHING IS £3 AND THE CAR PARK IS PAY AND DISPLAY AND FILLS QUICKLY IN THE SUMMER.
